Fleas:

·       95% of fleas are in your home, your yard and in your car. Only 5% are on your pet!

·       Fleas can live and reproduce year round in your home.

·       Bites can cause Flea Allergy Dermatitis, which is the most common skin disease in cats and dogs

·       Infestations can lead to skin irritation, secondary bacterial infections, self-inflicted trauma (from scratching) and in severe cases anemia and death.

·       Fleas transmit tapeworms, cat scratch fever and Typhus.

·       The fleas you see today, came from eggs laid more than 3 months ago, and are today laying eggs that will continue to hatch in your home.

·       And adult flea lays approximately 40-50 eggs per day.

Ticks:

·       There are over 800 species of ticks. The most common are the American dog tick, the Lone Star tick, Brown Dog tick and the Black-Legged or Deer Tick.

·       Ticks have several life stages: Egg, larva, nymph and adult. The only stage that doesn’t bite is the egg stage.

·       Ticks need to feed on blood to molt from 1 stage to another and to reproduce.

·       Ticks transmit diseases to pets and to people. Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Ehrlichiosis are all tick borne diseases.

 Products Available:

Promeris:    Promeris is a once a month, topical that treats fleas and ticks on dogs and fleas on cats. This product is waterproof and safe for dogs and puppies, 8 weeks or older and for cats and kittens, 8 weeks or older.

Comfortis:  Comfortis is an oral medication that kills fleas only. It is only for dogs.  Comfortis is a beef-flavored chew that begins to kill fleas within 30 minutes and continues to kill                them for one month.  It is safe for dogs and puppies 14 weeks or older.

Capstar:  Capstar is a fast acting oral medication that kills fleas only. Unlike Comfortis, Capstar only kills fleas for 24 hours.

Revolution:  Revolution is used mainly as a heartworm preventative in dogs and cats, however it also kills fleas and dog ticks on dogs and fleas in cats. This is a prescription product and only available through a vet.

Sentinel:  Sentinel is also a heartworm preventative, strictly for dogs. Along with preventing heartworms, Sentinel also has a flea sterilization agent in it. Sentinel will not kill adult fleas, but it will prevent them from multiplying. Just like Revolution, Sentinel is only available through a vet.
